International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
International English Language Testing
System (IELTS) is a test of English language proficiency. The IELTS test is
jointly owned by The British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and University of
Cambridge - ESOL Examinations.
IELTS Test Format ?
All candidates are tested in Listening, Reading, Writing and
Speaking. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules. There is
a choice of Reading and Writing Modules, where a candidate can either opt for
Academic or General Training Module.
The first three Modules- Listening, Reading and Writing-
must be completed in one day. The Speaking Module may be taken, at the
discretion of the test centre, either seven days before or after the other three
modules. Candidates may choose either the Academic Module or the General Training
Module. The Academic Module is intended for those who wish to enroll in
universities and other institutions of higher education. The General Training
Module is intended for those planning to undertake non-academic training or to
gain work experience, or for immigration purposes.
The test has four sections:
1. Listening
- 4 sections, 40 questions, 30 minutes
2. Speaking
- interview, 15 minutes
3. Reading
- different for Academic or General Training - 3 sections, 40 questions, 60
minutes
4. Writing
- different for Academic or General Training - 2 pieces of writing, 60 minutes
IELTS is accepted by most Australian, British, Canadian,
Irish, New Zealand and South African academic institutions, by an increasing
number of academic institutions in the USA, and by various professional
organizations. It is also a requirement for migration to Australia and Canada.
Recognizing IELTS
This test is specified as fulfilling English language requirements for entry to
academic courses by the majority of institutions of Further and Higher Education
in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom
and currently by over 544 universities and colleges in the USA. It is also used
by a number of professional bodies world-wide, including the Ministry of
Defense, and the General Medical Council in the UK, the Australian Medical
Council and Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, the Medical
Council of Ireland, the New Zealand Immigration Service and the Commission on
Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools in the USA.
